Autoimmune drive in neurodegeneration
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis may be driven by an autoimmune attack, not just degeneration. The team found a type of immune cell called helper T cells that wrongly target a neuron protein called C9orf72. They saw two immune profiles: one with strong inflammation linked to shorter survival, and another with protective regulatory cells that may slow damage and guide immune therapies.
