Dr. Bedlack's hypothesis on HMB
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) may depend on insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), a signal that helps neurons repair, and on IGF binding protein 7 (IGFBP7) that can block it. Lowering IGFBP7 could let IGF-1 reach motor neurons, a hopeful idea tested with beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate (HMB), a safe supplement. This is not a cure, it's a hypothesis worth watching.
